Screen_Shot_2016-07-29_at_4.14.55_PM.pngIntegrating sensors into small devices has never been easy, but the challenge to design new feature-rich products keeps growing, from smartphones to tablets, laptops, IoT, medical, health & fitness, and autonomous vehicles.

Today’s engineers need an IoT and mobile interface that supports many diverse sensors at a low power budget while minimizing design complexity. MIPI Alliance members can now access MIPI I3C, or MIPI® Alliance Specification for I3CSM Improved Inter Integrated Circuit, a new specification that solves these design challenges and offers system designers more flexibility and simplicity.

MIPI I3C was developed collaboratively with the broader sensor industry as an evolutionary step beyond legacy interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, and GPIO; MIPI I3C is compatible with each approach). MIPI I3C uses just two pins and consumes a fraction of the energy, reducing cost and complexity while allowing multiple sensors from different vendors to be easily interfaced to a controller or application processor.

In this paper, you will learn about:

  • Speed, power efficiency, and timing accuracy improvements
  • How In-Band Interrupts replace dedicated lines (interrupt, chip select, and sleep)
  • Advances including multi-Master, Hot-Join, and optional Ternary encoding (HDR mode) for extra bandwidth
  • Benefits to smartphone, wearable, and IoT products through short case studies
