Several months ago, MIPI I3C BasicSM, a subset of the MIPI I3C bus interface, was made available to the broader developer community without MIPI membership to foster greater interoperability and innovation in industries beyond mobile, including IoT and automotive.

System designers and software developers look to MIPI I3C and I3C Basic to streamline sensor integration by providing a chip-to-chip interface that can connect all sensors in a device to the host processor.

In a recent Electronic Design article, “MIPI I3C Basic Transforms Sensor Proliferation from Challenges into Opportunities,” Ken Foust, MIPI Sensor Working Group chair, shares how MIPI I3C and I3C Basic help designers and developers meet demanding market requirements.

In addition to providing an overview of the specification and answering common implementation questions, the article dives into a variety of use cases. For example, today’s connected cars and autonomous systems are full of sensors, and MIPI I3C enables sensor data transport and control/manageability. In addition, I3C works as a complement to other MIPI specifications like MIPI CSI-2SM to provide a reliable and managed data link.
